Ideas We Love: Unity in Glass

Believe it or not, the unity candle at a wedding ceremony has no basis in religion–it's just a nice gesture that has become popular and, arguably, commonplace that many people think that it has religious symbolism attached to it.

The lighting of the unity candle is representative two individuals or two families, or two lights becoming one–it's a lovely idea and one that so many of my clients embrace. Sometimes couples choose to do a sand ceremony in lieu of a unity candle which is also a great idea and a little different.

But one of my upcoming #kowecouples is doing this unique idea and I wanted to share it with you–it's a fresh take on the unity ceremony and it's really cool (or hot as the case may be!).

The company is called Unity in Glass and instead of lighting a candle or combining sand during your unity ceremony, you combine glass crystals. Before you get married you place an order with Unity in Glass–they offer different decorative glass elements such as a scuplture, bowl, or vase. You also pick what colors you'd like to use.

Then, during the wedding ceremony, you combine the colored glass crystals you chose into a container. After the wedding you send the crystals back to Unity in Glass where they handcraft a totally unique, handblown glass keepsake from your wedding to display in your home.

The whole process takes 2-6 weeks (after you send them the combined crystals) and you're left with a great conversation piece and a tanglible memory from your ceremony (aside from your wedding rings, of course)!

I think this is such a cool and innovative idea and I can't wait to see it in May at our KOWE wedding.

Did you do a unity ceremony at your wedding? Are you planning to do one? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments!

Sixty State Place Bridal Show–February 22nd!

Bridal shows are really efficient events. I know a lot of professionals are wary of their effectiveness and relevance today–especially in this internet age. But I think bridal shows are a really great way for engaged couples to connect with vendors in person and really get a sense of their personality and whether or not they'll be a good fit for their wedding.

Which is why I'm excited to announce that one of my favorite downtown Albany venues is hosting a bridal show this Sunday, February 22nd from noon to 4pm! Sixty State Place will be opening their doors to the Capital Region's top wedding professionals and you're invited!

KOWE + Bride & Gown Albany = a Perfect "Galentine's Day!"

February 13th…also known as, “Galentine's Day.” Never heard of Galentine's Day? What exactly is it, you may be wondering? Well, anyone who is a fan of the NBC hit show “Parks and Recreation” will likely know it. Galentine's Day is February 13th and is a day for ladies to celebrate ladies.

Which is why Eliza DeRocker, owner of Bride and Gown in Glens Falls, decided to hold the grand opening of her new Albany location on February 13th–Galentine's Day! Eliza reached out to Team KOWE to be a part of the grand opening for her new shop, located at 1789 Western Ave in Guilderland. My team and I will be on hand to not only celebrate this amazing accomplishment for Eliza and her crew, but to answer any wedding planning questions anyone attending may have.

 Bride And Gown

I'm so excited to Eliza to have an Albany location–it was just about a year ago that we featured her Glens Falls shop here on the KOWE blog–check out the post here.

As a refresher, Bride and Gown is a unique bridal gown store in that it offers once worn and sample gowns at tremendous discounts. Eliza and her staff are so discerning when it comes to purchasing gowns for her shops and will only sell or consign a dress that meets her rigorous standards.

For anyone on a budget or looking for a specific gown that may no longer be available, I would definitely recommend Bride and Gown–now with TWO locations!

So come celebrate Galentine's Day AND the opening of Bride and Gown's Albany location at 1789 Western Ave, Guilderland, this Friday, February 13th from 5pm to 8pm! As a special opening day treat, guests attending the opening celebration can enter to win a free bridal gown valued at up to $800!

Hope to see you this Friday!

Happy Valentine's Week…Your Guide to Love Week!

Happy (almost) Valentine's Day, friends! As you know, I love Love. I've always been smitten with the idea of it. And even when I was a single lady, I still tried to see the silver lining and the best intentions of the day (even though, yeah, it's sort of a “Hallmark” holiday, I still like it).

With Valentine's Day falling at the end of the week, I thought it would be fun to suggest some ideas to help you spread the love all week long. Let's start it off with the essentials…food and flowers!

Sweets: one of the keystones of any Valentine's celebration! What guy or gal doesn't enjoy getting a sweet treat for Valentine's Day? My suggestion: an assortment of cookies or cupcakes (or brownies, or scones, whatever strikes your fancy) from our friends at Bake For You in Albany! You're sure to make your Valentine smile with a box from Bake For You. Below, their special cabernet brownie…yum!

Eats: Dinner–sometimes it's almost better to NOT go out to eat on Valentine's Day. Many restaurants plan a pre-fixe menu and there can be a lot of pressure associated with this meal (not to mention reservations can be tough to come by)…but Friday night would be perfect to head out for a nice, romantic meal! Nate and I love New World Bistro Bar and our friends at DP's  /  Yono's--all in Albany–always make an amazing meal. If you're in Troy, consider checking out the new Peck's Arcade and in the Schenectady area, maybe Angelo's Tavolo?

Flowers: Again, since Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday, consider sending flowers during the week so your Valentine can enjoy them all week at their office or at home. As you know, we love small businesses–our friends at Fleurtacious Designs (featured below), Surroundings Florals, Anthology Studio, and Experience and Creative Design are all amazing floral designers that can create an arrangement to knock the socks off your special someone.

Looking for a non-traditional Valentine's Day date? Or maybe you just started dating someone and you're looking for an alternative to the norm? Consider taking a cooking class together at Different Drummer's Kitchen at Stuyvesant Plaza or maybe schedule a session at Saratoga Paint and Sip (with a new Latham location)! Both of these ideas offer a low pressure, fun date–what a great way to get to know someone better!

And if you're looking for something for the guy in your life, consider a gift card to Rumors for Men in Latham (Nate's go-to spot) or Harry's Shaving Products.

Newly engaged? A KOWE gift card always fits and is a great idea for a newly engaged couple!

Hope this helps you figure out a way to spend your Valentine's Day! How are you spending the day? Let me know in the comments!
