Things I'm Thankful For…

Happy Thanksgiving, faithful blog readers! I wanted to take a minute to share with you some of the things I am most thankful for this year.

It may sound weird and cheesy, but just when I thought I couldn't have more gratitude, I'm overwhelmed with how thankful I am for the many opportunities I've been afforded and the risks I was encouraged to take. Even with all the challenges and hardships I've endured starting and growing this business, I so appreciate and value the flexibility it offers me. I can take time when I need to and I can work around the clock if that is what is needed. I can celebrate the end of a successful wedding season and cheer two 2014 brides (those brides would be Jillian and me)!

This year, more than ever before, I am especially thankful. Katie O' Weddings and Events has had its busiest and most successful year to date with over 43 weddings and events; I got engaged to a wonderful man who makes me sparkle more than I thought was possible; and I'm so lucky that I'm working a job that I truly love.

Mostly, I am continually amazed that my job rarely feels like work; even after a 12 hour day! I mean, I get to help create sparkly moments and memories like the one below from Kelly and Craig's wedding…does it get any better?

In addition, I am thankful that I get to work with so many awesome people. From my amazing clients and their families, to my staff of talented coordinators and interns, and other vendors who are present on the day of an event–I sometimes feel like the conductor of an orchestra when we are all in tune, it is a beautiful thing! Of course, it is my job to make sure we are in tune–but I love it. I really do. Especially when, at the end of the night, we get moments like this from Kate and Ian's wedding this past Saturday–and a forehead kiss, to boot.

Also, Starbucks. Oh, sweet Starbucks–such a lifesaver!

And, last, I want to thank YOU–my blog readers! It is not always easy coming up with content and keeping things fresh, but I have been overwhelmed with the positive feedback and response from my readers. So thank you for following along and supporting KOWE!

Therefore, from everyone at Katie O' Weddings and Events, we sincerely hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by friends, family, food, and fun. Please be safe!

XO and keep sparkling–

Our Favorites from Elario Photography's Behind the Scenes 2013!

It's hard to believe another wedding season is winding down. In fact, the KOWE crew is working a wedding today and then just a few more events to close out 2013. I can't believe it–this year flew by!

Our friends at Elario Photography put together their annual “Behind the Scenes” blog this week and we picked out a few of our favorites. We worked with these guys (and gals) a lot this season–11 weddings total–and we couldn't be happier about it. They're always professional, fun, and create amazing images for our clients. Katie O' Weddings and Events is truly thankful to work with Joe, JP, Hayden, Jenny, and Jaime as much as we do. Check out our favorites below!

Sometimes you need to be creative when you're transporting photobooth props! Ole!

Back in April, JP and I take Washington Ave in Albany by storm…we sort of look like Laverne and Shirley, no?Bts2013 009

I LOVE watching my clients being photographed (though I sort of look like I'm trying to get a baby to smile here); I'm so excited because I know their photos will be nothing short of amazing. Also, can we talk about JP's jazzy socks?!

Up in Saratoga for Megan and Rob's wedding…this was the beginning of the rainy season. We're about to head down the aisle and everything is A-OK!

Bts2013 015

And here's that rain…trying to protect Megan's gorgeous hair, makeup, and dress!

Bts2013 019

In June we headed downstate for Erin and Tim's Westchester wedding. It was pouring and we were all a little on edge–whoa, Hayden!  Bts2013 046

The rain was insane that day! Here's Kelly (aka Frenchie) helping to block the rain. And smiling through it all because she's awesome. We miss you, Frenchie!

Bts2013 048

Here I am maintaining the integrity of the gown while JP shoots away…and how awesome is the result?!

Bts2013 049

That wild rain again. Seriously, I should invest in an umbrella company! This was the wedding where we learned to bring a back up set of clothes because Kelly and I were drenched!

Bts2013 050

Ahh, the sun is shining in Schenectady for Hilary and her girls!

Bts2013 058

Checking the weather compulsively because we know it's about to rain…

Caution: Bride Crossing! Saratoga Spa State Park should invest in those signs!

Strolling on the Empire State Plaza in July with Kat and Dan…

Shaking hands with yet another chair. JP is ALWAYS asking me to go grab a chair for him…so demanding! Hah!

And hanging in the graveyard for Rhiannon and Vinny's Halloween wedding!

So there you have some of my favorite shots from our Elario / KOWE weddings this season! It's always so much fun to go back and look through images and remember each wedding…they're all so similar, yet vastly different. It never ceases to amaze me!

Katie O' Gets Married: How I Asked My 'Maids

Before I was engaged I always thought I would have a minimal bridal party…as in, just my sister and best friend by my side. But as time went on and I actually became engaged I started to reassess the situation (I'm a big believer in not really making decisions until you're actually in the position to make them).

For our wedding, I've asked five ladies to stand by my side and help me with all things wedding related. Truth be told, I could have asked so many people; I consider myself so very fortunate to have so many amazing friends. But the five women I chose all represent something different and have their own brand of sparkle that I felt best suited them for the job.

For my matrons of honor, I've asked my sister, Kristen, and dear friend, Jenn. For all of my 'maids I found these amazing cards from my sparkly friend, Rebecca Ashby, of The Pink Orange. They are the best card to ask someone to do me the honor of being a bridesmaid–perfect, right?

Actually, I want to talk a little bit about the term “bridesmaid.” For me and my ladies, the term “lifemaids” actually is more apropos. Why? Well, these women have seen me through thick and thin, business, personal, and otherwise–they're not just there for the wedding, they're here for the long haul. And, thus, the term “lifemaid” was coined. Should I trademark it?! Hah.

In addition to the amazing cards from The Pink Orange, I found these super sparkly earrings from Lola Accessory Boutique in Saratoga Springs. Aren't they so awesome?

But for my other three “lifemaids” I decided to throw them a curveball…I actually sneaked the question into a wedding rehearsal. Now, before you start questioning my professionalism, the rehearsal was all over and as we were leaving the rehearsal I gave Jillian and Megan a “revised” timeline for the ceremony the next day and at the end…well, see below! They were so surprised! I did the same for Nicki, too–just at a different event!

It was a lot of fun and I packed gift bags for everyone that had some bubbly and we drank a bit in the car afterwards (we had a ride–ahem–Nate–not to worry!) with fun striped straws in KOWE green also available from The Pink Orange.

So that's the story! Not so great iPhone photos, but, hey, we were in the moment! Also, today we found the bridesmaids dresses at Fancy Schmancy…but that's for another post!

One fun and related sidenote, if you're looking to check out either The Pink Orange or Lola Accessory Boutique, be sure to stop by Girls Night Out at Lola on Thursday, November 21st from 5pm-8pm. New items will be featured and you can enter for a chance to have your holiday party styled by The Pink Orange & Lola Accessory Boutique!

The lucky winner will receive jewelry for their holiday party from Lola and have their party designed by The Pink Orange! For every $20 you spend, your name will be entered into a drawing for the chance to be our grand prize winner.

Erin Marzilli will also be on hand giving mini-makeovers to attendees! Stop by to shop, mingle and eat sweet treats by Bake For You while sipping some signature cocktails AND getting a jump on your holiday shopping!

Did you do something special to ask your bridal party to join you on your wedding day? Let me know in the comments.

Katie O' Gets Married: The Most Important Part of Getting Married

The past few weeks have been difficult on a personal level. I'm not going to go into great detail, but a great light in our life has gone out. And that's all I will say.

The lyric from John Lennon's song, Beautiful Boy, “life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans” is so true and incredibly poignant. For me, perhaps the word “wedding” should be thrown in between the words “other” and “plans.” The career path I've chosen and that I truly love takes me away for many weekends out of the year. While I'm guiding my clients through their wedding days, I miss birthdays, anniversaries and other special events. Like so many people, striking that balance between work and home life can be a challenge.

But during trying times, when our character, will, and patience is tested with this beautiful mess that is life, I know I have Nate and our amazing families to help guide us through. It's amazing the clarity and perspective that can come when we're faced with the harsh realities of life. A few weeks ago Nate and I were belaboring a wedding decision and now, I almost forget what we were conflcted about.

And, once again, this process–our journey to the altar–has humbled me. I've always been a very grateful person and I appreciate the people in my life who I lean on and who make me better and I definitely tell them how important they are to me a lot. But as the days and weeks go by and we get closer to our wedding date, I find myself even more thankful for these people–our people.

Now, don't get me wrong, wedding details, invitations, timelines, etc.–these are my (work) life and are SO important for your wedding day. But the most important thing, for me, is knowing that Nate and I will become our own little family (I'd like to think we already are) on March 14, 2014. You've probably heard the adage at weddings, “years from now you will look back on this day, your wedding day, as the day you loved each other the least,” but I know this will be true of Nate and I.

Katie O Engaged 12

So as we keep making decisions for our big day, I just keep anticiating the love and joy that we'll feel with everyone that we love–family and friends–in one room on that one day. We're going to try and capture it and keep it with us everyday of our lives.

And as the years go on, I know the people who have helped us on our path, our biggest cheerleaders–our families–will be there in our hearts always and forever. To me, this is the most important part of getting married.
