Trends: Let's Go on a Wedding "Picnic"

Happy Monday, friends! It's so nice to see the sunshine (finally)! Today we have a summery wedding Trends post for you to set off the week! We're talking about picnic trends for weddings! Grab your picnic basket, your dress, your rings, and let's go!

Historic Barns of Nipmoose: These barns are amazing! Restored in 2001 through the work of the Persistence Foundation, the Barns of Nipmoose are pristine examples of historic agricultural landscapes in the northeast. Dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, the barns reflect the immigrant-argcultural architecture (Scottish, German, etc.). I think they're an incredible and romantic venue, too! Tiffany Wayne captured this gorgeous photo of the barns! Wow, right?!

John Boyd Thacher State Park: With stunning views of the Helderberg Escarpment, Thacher State Park has several large picnic areas that are great for a more informal, laid back affair. I love this image from a 2008 Elario wedding at Thacher Park!

Tablescapes: So many fun options when it comes to a “picnic” wedding! I love this image from the Revel blog!

Would you consider having a relaxed, outdoor, “picnic” wedding (if so, you know Katie O' Weddings and Events can help with that, right?!)? Let's talk about it in the comments!

Wedding Wednesday: Tasting with Deedee & Ian at the Mansion Inn

Happy Wedding Wednesday, friends! I have a fun one for you today! A sneak peek into the real decisions of a full service planning couple I have the honor to be working with–Deedee and Ian! Deedee and Ian hired Katie O' Events a month before they graduated from Albany Medical College and have since started their residencies in Texas. Deedee and Ian knew they wanted to get married in Upstate New York as they have ties to the area. Prior to their graduation and big move we nailed down  a bunch of big decisions for their October 2014 wedding, including the venue–the gorgeous Mansion Inn of Saratoga in Rock City Falls, NY.

Today's post is focusing on their tasting at the inn. A tasting is intended for the bride and groom (and sometimes lucky wedding planners) to check out the menu items they're considering offering at their wedding. This way the couple can sample the menu and make sure they're happy with what will be served. In most cases, the tasting is held closer to the actual event, but, again, with Deedee and Ian moving out of the area, the Mansion Inn of Saratoga let them hold their tasting early! We were SO THANKFUL to Chef Rick Bieber and Event Manager / Innkeeper Lori Laustrup for that!

Let the tasting begin! Their appetizers are amazing! Deedee and Ian chose a flatbread station with three pizzas–a margherita, Buffalo chicken, or broccoli rabe with roasted garlic and aged parmesan. YUM.

In addition to the pizzas, there will be a few passed hor d'oeuvres, including house made Saratoga potato chips topped with seared filet mignon, carmelized onions, and horseradish sauce; chilled cajun shrimp; and southwest style spring roll! Gotta love the infusion of some southern flavors–a favorite of Ian's and they are Texans now…

Are you hungry yet?! Hahah–I am!

Next up, soup and salad! The salad was an amazing arugula with poached pears, candied walnuts, and dried cranberries with a balsamic vinaigarette. This was paired with a bowl of roasted tomato bisque with a grilled cheese crouton. One word; three syllables: A-MA-ZING.

IMG 3335

On to the main course! So Deedee is from central New York and really wanted to have a traditional Italian dish that is native to the Utica / Syracuse area…Chicken Riggi! Chef Rick had never made Chicken Riggi, but Deedee found a recipe and sent it to him to try. Chef Rick said he was a bit nervous for Deedee to taste it, but turned out perfect!

Butternut squash lasagna! YUM (and vegetarian)!

IMG 3338

Stuffed chicken filled with carmelized onion, roasted poblano peppers, spinach, and monteray jack cheese topped with mole sauce and served with blackbeans and rice. OMG.

IMG 3339

Last, but not least (so many great options)–braised short ribs in a red wine demi-glace over creamy parmesan polenta with seasonal vegetables.

IMG 3340

Onto desserts (my favorite part)! Deedee and Ian decided on cheesecake lollipops (I was so full I couldn't even finish mine); mini pecan pies with chantilly cream; and double chocolate brownies (half of these will have a peanut butter frosting). So. Good.

Deedee and Ian made some amazing (and tasty) decisions! While I'm always excited when a KOWE couple gets married, I'm particularly excited for Deedee and Ian's day because I have yet to work at the Mansion Inn and I'm really loving the unique space that they have there. There are accomodations on-site, too, and several lovely options for both the ceremony and reception site. Needless to say, October 2014 can't come soon enough!

Thanks again to Chef Rick and Lori at the Mansion Inn of Saratoga for being so flexible and willing to work Deedee and Ian–the Docs thank you!

Hope you enjoyed this post! Did you (or will you) do a tasting for your wedding? Did you change your mind about any of the foods you picked? Let me know in the comments!

Trends: Mad Men, Gatsby, and Downton Abbey Gowns

Happy Monday, friends! We're back with a fun Trends post for you! So do you watch Mad Men, or Downton Abbey, or have you seen The Great Gatsby (or read it)? I love them all and so much so that I decided to dedicate a post to gowns inspired by these shows / movie!

The Drapers, the Great Gatsby, and Downton Abbey are not only great entertainment, they're making waves across the design world. Mid-Century modern, the Gilded Age, and the Golden Age are making a comeback. Let's check out some gowns inspired by these great shows and movie!

For the Mad Men inspired bride, how about this fabulous wedding gown that looks like it's straight out of 1952. I love the neckline and the subtle hint of lace at the bottom. I could see either Betty OR Megan in this…

For the Gatsby fans, I found this amazing Jenny Packham gown (the Alessia) that ticks all the boxes. I love the back of the dress and the rhinestone detail in the front.

And for all of my Downton Abbey peeps that have been inspired by Lady Mary and Lady Edith's wedding gowns, I found this lovely from Claire Pettibone. I imagine Lady Sybil would have worn something like this…maybe too fancy for Branson's taste, though.

Ahh, I love all of these! I so want one of my brides to wear one of these dresses (or something similar)! Would you consider an “inspired” gown? Let me know in the comments!

Wedding Wednesday: Favorites from Katie O's Instagram!

Happy Wedding Wednesday, friends! Like so many of us I LOVE Instagram! I post about my work as a wedding and events planner, my family, and my Katie O' couples! As you may have noticed on the blog I sometimes include a “moment” photo (usually during more standard Wedding Wednesday posts). I typically choose the professional photos but, I have to admit, sometimes the Instagram pics I catch with my iPhone are pretty darn great, too. Lots of “moment” photos between the couple and some generally awesome wedding snapshots are all caught on my Instagram feed. Check out some of my favorites below!

I captured this sweet moment from Polina and Tony's 2012 wedding…so cute (and he's still holding his beer)!

Sometimes I snap pics of my fellow wedding professionals…here's DJ Paul Malo working hard at a Hall of Springs wedding!
